Diego Department of Economics Intervening Opportunities , Competing Searchers , and the Intra - Metropolitan Flow of Male Youth Labor

چکیده
This paper analyzes the determinants of the journey-to-work commute patterns for male teenage workers within a single local labor market: the Oakland Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area. Controlling for the intervening opportunities and the intervening labor supply between a given origin and destination reduces the estimated negative effect of distance on the inter-zonal flow of labor by nearly ninety percent. Nonetheless, physical distance has a significant and substantial negative effect on intra-metropolitan youth labor flows. Despite the high correlation between intervening opportunities and intervening competing workers, both spatial variables have sizable, and independent, effects on labor flows. JEL Codes: R100, R230

The Impact of Human Capital (Health and Education) on Labor Productivity; a Composite Model Approach- a Case Study of Iran
P roductivity promotion has received a key attention in contemporary macroeconomic analysis. Productivity of labor driven, in particular, by human capital (i.e. health and education), is seen vitally more important. Labor qualities in terms of health and education (treated as flow and stock variables), have a bearing on labor productivity. The main objective of this paper is to ident...
متن کاملDivergence and Mobility in College Attainment Across U . S . Labor Market Areas : 1970 – 2000
Human capital is one factor that significantly influences local economic growth. Our goal in this research is to analyze trends in local human capital dynamics during the past thirty years. The authors find little evidence of convergence in college attainment across metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas and evidence of divergence across Census regions. The authors also find within-distribution...

متن کاملGender and the Factors Affecting Child Labor in Iran: an Application of IV-TOBIT Model
In this paper we first intend to examine the probability of falling into the realm of child labor by using conditional probability theorem. Furthermore, we will compare the extent of each factor’s effect on boys and girls using a TOBIT regression model. Finally we will analyze aspects of Iran’s labor market to assess the future ahead of the children who work at present. As the results will show...
متن کاملEndogenous Matching Functions: an Agent-Based Computational Approach
The matching function has become a popular tool in labor economics. It relates job creation – a flow variable – to two stock variables: vacancies and job searchers. In most studies the matching function is exogenous and assumed to fulfill certain properties. This study looks at the properties of an endogenous matching function. For that purpose we program an agent-based-computational labor mark...
